People Can Now Apply For A Divorce Online In England & Wales

Thursday, May 10th 2018 8:29pm

After a pilot scheme proved successful the opportunity to apply for a divorce from the comfort of their living rooms online is set to be rolled out to all of England and Wales. The law wants to make the whole divorce process easier for individuals to negotiate and the fact that people will be able to apply for a divorce digitally will mean that thousands of hours of court time will be freed up.

Speeding Up The Divorce Process

Online Divorce ProcessJustice Minister Lucy Fraser is quoted in the Law Gazette as saying: 'Allowing divorce applications to be made online will help make sure we are best supporting people going through an often difficult and painful time. More people will have the option of moving from paper-based processes to online systems which will cut waste, speed up services which can be safely expedited, and otherwise better fit with modern day life.'

And a disabled woman who received legal confirmation of her divorce 11.5 weeks after submitting her application through the pilot online divorce scheme was quoted as saying: 'The service was a lot easier because I use a wheelchair and didn't have to go out, and I also found it very easy as an autistic person to get support from the team when I had questions.' According to the ministry, the paper process would have taken around six months.`

It will be interesting to see how successful this new process proves over the next few weeks and months. Of course this online process will only work if the divorce proves to be straightforward and uncontested, for people who are having issues with their partners and having to contest various issues during divorce proceedings the courts will likely prove the best option.

In the above scenario having an experienced divorce solicitor on your side to fight your corner is vital.
